Davus pentaloris goes the other way. It is smaller, quicker, and packed with enough color and attitude to stand out the second you see it. A lot of keepers know it as the Guatemalan Tiger Rump, and that name fits. The orange abdomen, dark striping, and compact build give it a sharp, almost polished look.

This species comes from Guatemala and southern Mexico and is usually kept as a terrestrial tarantula. Give it decent substrate, a hide, and some room to settle in, and it often does exactly what you want a tarantula to do: dig a bit, web up its corner, and keep you guessing about where it will show up next. That kind of behavior is half the fun.

Davus pentaloris is not the species I would call calm. It tends to be fast and a little jumpy, and if it feels crowded it may kick hairs to make its opinion clear. Still, that is part of what makes it interesting. It feels alert. You are not looking at a decoration in a box; you are watching an animal that is paying attention.

Care is pretty straightforward. A simple terrestrial setup works well, with dry to slightly moist substrate, good airflow, and a place to retreat. Roaches, crickets, and mealworms are all fair game, and a healthy specimen usually does not need much encouragement at feeding time.

What I like most about Davus pentaloris is that it earns your attention without relying on size. It is a smaller tarantula, sure, but it does not feel small. Between the color, the speed, and the personality, this is one of those species that sticks in your mind.

Some tarantulas are impressive because they are huge.
